The Hebrew Roots Cult
Titus 1:10-11, 13-14 For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach…For this reason reprove them severely so that they may be sound in the faith, not paying attention to Jewish myths and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.
What an insidious and devious Enemy we have! The ability to take devout men and women of God who are zealous for good works and twist their desires so as to put them back into bondage to the Law illustrates the truly evil nature of Satan.
I had the recent misfortune of encountering a cult which is growing in influence within Christianity. It is not to be confused with Messianic Judaism or simply seeking to explore the Jewish culture within which most of the Bible was written. Although there are many organizations which are promoting this general view and their specific doctrines often vary, it is generally known as the Hebrew Roots Movement.
Why Haven't I Heard About This?
As a rule, this spreading wave of false doctrine is not being addressed by the church. This is due to several reasons:
* There is a fear of appearing anti-Semitic
* The depth of the movement’s doctrinal heresies is not generally known
* There is within the church in general a reluctance to address false doctrine
* The movement usually hides their beliefs and presents itself as simply seeking to educate Christians concerning their Jewish heritage. As they become acclimated to the Jewish orientation the more aberrant doctrines are slowly introduced.
The influence of this movement is working its way into our churches and our seminaries. The longer we refuse to address it directly and publicly the greater the damage will be to our brothers and sisters and to the core doctrines of our faith. If it is not the responsibility of the clergy to correct issues of doctrine, then whose responsibility is it?
A Few Symptoms
Allow me to delineate some of their more common symptomatic doctrinal heresies:
* All Christians should adhere to a kosher diet
* The Sabbath can only be observed on Saturdays
* The Jewish festivals and holidays should still be observed today
I addressed in a previous article why these are not sound doctrinal stances so I will not reiterate them here.
The Cause
The root of their symptomatic heresies is hermeneutic (having to do with the methodology used to interpret scripture) in nature. The Protestant Reformers used a grammatical-literal hermeneutic when interpreting scripture. In other words, it means what it says unless there is a significant reason to believe otherwise. This movement uses a grammatical-historical hermeneutic with a twist. Their underlying assumptions when approaching any scripture are:
* Whatever God has ever commanded of those who seek Him (i.e., the Jews, their ancestors, their descendents, and Christians) is still in effect today (including the Levitical law)
* Gentile followers of Christ were “grafted into” the Jews which they interpret to mean that Gentiles must assume Jewish customs if they really want to mature and please God
Based on those unquestionable assumptions, they then decide how they can best interpret a given scripture to support those beliefs.
The farther down this rabbit hole they go, the more bizarre their doctrines become. Many see the New Testament as inferior to the Old (or a conspiracy by the Catholic church). More still say that Paul’s teachings are contrary to Christ (since they have trouble with his obvious statements against their beliefs) and, therefore, reject his epistles as scripture. Some say that the only reason we aren’t still sacrificing animals and stoning people for their sins is because there is no Temple and no Sanhedrin. But when they are restored then these will resume. Others go so far as to eventually reject Jesus as the Messiah and simply say that He was just a Rabbi. The inevitable outcome of following this train of thought is to put people back into bondage to the Law.
The Truth
These heresies are so fundamentally and obviously wrong that I hesitate to even address them. However, it is apparently not obvious to the adherents of this cult so I will briefly spell out a few.
We (as Gentile believers) were not grafted into the Law and Judaism but into the faith of Abraham which preceded the Law and Jewish customs (Romans 4, Romans 11:17-24, Galatians 3:15-18). The law was given because of transgressions and to be our tutor to lead us to Christ (Galatians 3:19,24,25). Jesus fulfilled all of the requirements of the law (Matthew 5:17-20) for all time (John 19:30, Romans 5:12-21). We were “made to die to the Law through the body of Christ” so that we might be joined to Him (Romans 7:1-6, Galatians 2:19,21) because Christ is “the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes” (Romans 10:4). You mature in Christ and please Him by the same means by which you were saved…by faith…not by following the Law.
Galatians 3:1-4 You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Did you suffer so many things in vain--if indeed it was in vain?
No where in the Bible do we find Gentile believers being instructed to follow Levitical laws or Jewish customs. In fact, just the opposite (see my previous article). However, we do find several examples where Jewish Christians are reprimanded for trying to convince Gentile Christians to follow the Law (Acts 15, Galatians, Romans 14, Titus 1).
Those in the Hebrew Roots cult have stumbled over the Great Stumbling Block (1 Corinthians 1:23,24, Galatians 5:11). This heresy goes all the way back to the first century but like a bad penny it keeps turning up every few centuries. Beware of those who come to you professing to educate you about your Hebrew roots in order to “make you a better Christian” or to “restore your Biblical Hebrew heritage.” Question them closely concerning these heresies to prevent them from being introduced into your churches and families (as they have been introduced into mine).
Below are some websites with more information concerning the Hebrew Roots Movement as well as relevant scriptures for you to consider. Test the spirits, my brothers and sisters and refute unsound doctrine (Titus 1:9).

Galatians 3:28,29 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise.
Romans 2:17-21 But if you bear the name “Jew” and rely upon the Law and boast in God, and know His will and approve the things that are essential, being instructed out of the Law, and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, having in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth, you, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself?
1 Timothy 1:3, 6-10 As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines…For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions. But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching
2 Peter 2:1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.

Reading what you have posted, I have come across much of what you have blogged. I have approached this movement with caution.
I have not made a decision regarding eating clean food verses unclean food. Bacon tastes good on everything. And my pizza without sausage and pepperoni. hmmmmm I am not sure kosher is a good choice of wording. That comes from Rabbinical Judaism.
I do not have a problem with being a Sabbatarian. I made that decision about a month ago after two years of evaluation. I did not stop attending services on Sunday. I choose to spend time with family, friends, and YHWH alone on Saturday. Honestly, Sunday is not a day of rest when it comes to Christianity. We go out to eat, stop by Wal-Mart, do yard work, or go to the grocery store. We just make some other sap work on our Lord's Day. Additionally, if you believe in a millennium, there will be the Sabbath during it. I decided if I am going to follow 9 commandments, perhaps the fourth one should be followed too.
Isaiah 66:22-24
New King James Version (NKJV)
22 “For as the new heavens and the new earth
Which I will make shall remain before Me,” says the LORD,
“So shall your descendants and your name remain.
23 And it shall come to pass
That from one New Moon to another,
And from one Sabbath to another,
All flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the LORD.
Regarding the feasts, I have decide that I should participate in Passover using Christian symbolism. I am looking at the Fall feasts too. They are superior to Christmas and Easter.
Additionally, many view the Spring feasts as being fulfilled by Christ (Yeshua). And when He returns the second time, He will fulfill the Fall feasts...
Is not one feast mentioned in the millennium too?
Isaiah 14
19 This shall be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles.
I have tried to maintain my Reformed position. I am a five-point Calvinist .
I try to limit my "Law" following to the 10 Commandments. Much of the Torah can not be done for many reasons. First, Christ took care of all offerings through His atoning sacrifice. We don't have nor have need of Levitical Priests. Christ is our Melchizidek Priest. We are not in the land of Israel...And some of those Laws are to be handled by the government.
As a Christian, we need to be able to explain these verses adequately:
1 John 5
New King James Version (NKJV)
5 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.
Romans 8:7-9
New King James Version (NKJV)
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
Yodas_Prodigy, thank you for your comment.
Regarding eating unclean food - under the New Covenant, in general, there really is no such thing. The only things we are told to abstain from is the eating of blood, of things strangled, and of meat offered to idols.
Act 15:29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well.
I agree that Sunday is certainly not a day of rest for most believers, but honestly, neither is Saturday for sabbath keepers. We need to be careful to follow what the New Testament teaches since we are no longer under the law prescribed to the Jews in the Old Covenant.
Truth is, if we keep everything in proper context we can easily see that the keeping of ANY one particular day, be it Saturday or Sunday, was never taught in the New Testament, rather, it was just the opposite...see Gal. 4:9-11, Col. 2:16,17, and Rom. 14:5,6, for a very clear confirmation that we're not to judge each other in such things.
In regard to the 4th commandment about keeping the sabbath - it was a command specifically given to the Jews, just as circumcision was...this command was never carried into the New Covenant, therefore, we cannot make it a New Testament doctrine. The command to keep the sabbath was given to the Jew alone as a sign between them and God, it was never given to, or for, the NT believer.
Under the covenant of grace in the New Testament, JESUS is our Sabbath and our rest. We cease from all our works of self-righteousness and rest in HIS finished work on the cross AlONE. Praise His name that He fulfilled all the law and now we are made righteous and complete in Him! That truly is the Good News of the Gospel, we don't rely or rest in any particular "day" but in our wonderful Savior! :)
In His love,
Judie <><
Dear Judie
I understand why you write what you do. I defended the same arguments for years.
Not anymore. The blinders are slowly coming off.
I have some responses for you.
What do you do with 2 Timothy 3:16 “16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
All Scripture means Torah (first five books of the Bible) and the complete Tanakh (the whole “Old” Testament). For you see, the “New” Testament had not yet been written when Paul wrote this….yet.
So if this verse says ALL Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for DOCTRINE….how do YOU undo that DOCTRINE?
For instance,
Exodus 20:8“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
He never, ever changed this. If He did, please show me where GOD changed it, or even JESUS changed it.
Or how about the fact that God tells us we can not ADD to His Word (or change it!). So why do you think it is ok to change the Saturday Sabbath to Sunday?
Deuteronomy 4:2 “2 You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.”
If you check history is what Constantine and his political, anti-semitic forces that changed the Sabbath to Sunday. So that “Christians” would not in any way identify with Jews. Of course, it is all very complicated how everything changed. But, the fact is it did! And God NEVER gave any permission to change HIS WORD. HE IS UNCHANGING!
Lastly, (oh yes I could write pages)…..read this Isaiah verse. There are some beautiful promises for the people of God who honor the Sabbath (Saturday 7th day).
Isaiah 56:5-7
5 Even to them I will give in My house
And within My walls a place and a name
Better than that of sons and daughters;
I will give them[a] an everlasting name
That shall not be cut off.
6 “Also the sons of the foreigner
Who join themselves to the LORD, to serve Him,
And to love the name of the LORD, to be His servants—
Everyone who keeps from defiling the Sabbath,
And holds fast My covenant—
7 Even them I will bring to My holy mountain,
And make them joyful in My house of prayer.
Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
Will be accepted on My altar;
For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.”
Quick review. God told us to honor the Sabbath and keep it holy. You believe in the 10 Commandments don’t you? Not to murder, steal, commit adultery. And keep the Sabbath holy. Simple.
Paul tells us in Timothy that ALL Scripture is for doctrine.
God tells us NEVER TO ADD to His Word.
Judie when you begin to understand that God really wants to spend this very special day with you, in fact He set it apart just for you and Him. Your life will change! You will feel so good that you are obeying Him! And He will draw you close!
And that’s just the beginning of discovery of His true Word. There is so much more.
My friend sent me your link, and I had to respond. What you are saying is so untrue. Please pray and ask God to show the real Truth. It will set you free!
Shalom
Nancy
PS. Jesus honored the Sabbath (Saturday), so did the apostles, Paul and the first “church”. They would meet in the Temple and break bread together and pray. Every Sabbath. Of course. Why would they want to disobey God?

James in Acts 15:20-21 tells us that he did not want to trouble the Gentiles with too much instructions so he only gave a few instructions for them and then he said that the Gentiles would learn the things taught by Moses when the went to the Synagogue every Sabbath. So we see here that James (who was head of the Church) expected the Gentile believers to attend the Synagogue every Sabbath and there they would learn the teachings of Moses. Why would then need to learn the teachings of Moses if they were done away with?
Acts 15:230-21
Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:
20But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.
21For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.
